Free Educational Fun for Families at Edmonton Green’s EdMINItons Kids Club

Families needed free, fun, and educational activities during the school holidays, so Edmonton Green’s EdMINItons kids club stepped in.

CHALLENGE:
Families often struggle to keep their children entertained during school holidays, especially during a cost of living crisis, when finding affordable activities becomes even more challenging. With 20% of households lacking a native English speaker, many children miss out on the experience of stories being read to them in English. Additionally, Edmonton is among the most deprived 10% of all wards in England, making access to enriching experiences even more limited.

Edmonton Green wanted to address these issues by offering free, engaging, and educational activities through their kids club, EdMINItons. The goal was to provide fun experiences that not only entertained but also embraced the multicultural landscape of the area and introduced new, valuable experiences to children, all without adding financial pressure to families.

SOLUTION:

To address this challenge, Edmonton Green launched SS. Summer, an exciting sea-themed event series throughout the summer. These events provided a variety of activities that blended fun with education, all offered for free to the community.

Highlights included:

  • Jellyfish Crafting: Children learned about sustainability and protecting sea life while transforming paper plates into colourful jellyfish.
  • Mermaids Vs Pirates Adventure: Kids participated in interactive storytelling with a pirate and a mermaid, followed by a treasure hunt around North Square, where they discovered letters spelling out the secret word “Turtle,” earning a lollipop for completing the adventure.
  • VR Diving Experience: Virtual reality experiences are rare for families in this area. By offering VR headsets, Edmonton Green provided a unique opportunity for people of all ages to explore the ocean’s depths. Inside the headsets, users could access information sheets about the marine animals they encountered, enhancing their learning experience. Many participants finished the session having learned something new and having enjoyed a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Additionally, EdMINItons introduced two new exciting features:

  • EdMINItons Super Swap Card Game: A collectible card game launched with three unique cards, offering kids a fun and adventurous way to engage in the club.
  • Eddie and the Shimmering Sea: A free online storybook, further enriching the educational experience of children through a captivating sea-themed tale.

Through these efforts, Edmonton Green successfully provided families with an accessible, enriching, and creative way to keep their children entertained throughout the holidays.
